Head football coach Eric Waldstein met with the football team Tuesday morning before school to inform them about his resignation from the head football coaching position.

Athletic director Matt Alexander said “Waldstein found he wasn’t the right fit for the program and we decided together it was best to make a change and it was best for the program.”

Alexander said that in making a hire, there is a process the school has to go through and that they need to post the position internally for five days before turning outside. Alexander said when looking for a coach, the school looks for someone dedicated to building the program, increasing participation numbers and character and stability of the team.

“Any internal candidate will be considered and the school will make decisions based upon if anybody applies internally or not before going outside,” Alexander said.

When asked if assistant track coach Jordan Mullen had been approached about the head football position, Alexander said “nobody has been talked to about the head coaching position at this time.”

There are three open coaching spots on the football staff as of now.

Alexander wants the student body to know “Any of our programs for our school depend upon (students’) participation. If no one participates, then it will have an effect on our program.” He wants to encourage students to enjoy being a part of groups and teams and enjoy high school.

When students were asked on their thoughts of Waldstein’s decision to step down, freshman Sam Granner said Waldstein “will be missed”, and sophomore Austin Alexander said, “He taught me a lot about the game, but I respect his decision to step down.”
