Guy Somers
Guy Somers would describe himself as a “highly creative person.” His interests range from theatrical makeup to the art of chess. He loves music, art, acting, and teaching. Somers considers himself to be a “strategist.”
Somers teaches the new iJAG program at AHS. iJAG stands for Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates. According to the iJAG website, it calls itself “the premier non-profit organization connecting business and education to provide the most cost-effective dropout prevention and school to career solutions in Iowa.”
Somers moved 18 times before he was 18 years old. He lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Missouri, and is now living in Iowa. He attended Central Bible College, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Cincinnati, along with a few other colleges for teaching and classical guitar.
He has been teaching his entire career. He taught for 13 years in the nonprofit sector and 15 years with his business, Somer’s Guitar. He teaches guitar tech and “trains future rockstars.” Bands that he trained since their childhood now open for bigger bands like Quiet Riot.
Besides teaching, Somers is passionate about his family. He has a wife and four kids. He ensured that his family only lived in two places during their lifetime. His two daughters are teachers with their masters, and his two sons will be computer engineers.
He wants students to know that he is a realist. Somers said he is “someone that looks at the truth that doesn’t always what you want to hear or see so you can achieve because I am an optimist.”
