Henry Hallgren
Fresh out of Cornell College, Henry Hallgren teaches American Government and Current Public Issues. Originally planning on going to law school, he decided otherwise after encountering other lawyers. Around his sophomore year of college, Hallgren decided to pursue a teaching career instead. He said that it “went pretty well, I guess, because I’m here now.”
His expectation of students is for them to “think critically about what’s out there.” He also hopes for them to grasp the concept of politics. “I just want them to learn how the government works.” If Hallgren could choose a class to take on, he said that he would do something with international relations or teach the Comparative Government class. He would also like to eventually take over the AP Government classes as well.
He student taught at Northwest Middle School in the Iowa City School District. Therefore, this is his first proper teaching job. He had previously taught at a few summer camps as well. Since he’s new, Hallgren has yet to participate in any extracurricular activities. However, he hopes to obtain a coaching certificate to potentially help with the cross country and track team. This stems from the fact that he was an active participant in his college’s cross country team. His team eventually won on his junior and senior year.
