Bryan Hayes

Fisheries Biologist

Bryan Hayes is a fisheries biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He spoke to groups of students interested in the outdoors and related careers they can obtain. In his career, Hayes works to maintain, improve and establish fish populations in southern Iowa. He recommends that students attend a four-year college to study fisheries and wildlife biology.

According to Hayes, math, science and English are useful subjects in his field. Math is used for calculating the statistics about populations of fish, science to study water quality and English when speaking on his weekly radio show.

In the fisheries department, there are 87 different jobs, including a biologist and technician position. Technician is an introductory job for people that want to become a biologist. Hayes said those who want to become a biologist must be determined and work part-time jobs in order to get their name into the field.
