Brooke Lamp

School Psychologist

Brooke Lamp can be seen as someone who truly loves her job, as she spoke passionately of being a school psychologist during career day. After Lamp graduated from AHS, she attended college at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She now resides in Atlantic as a self-proclaimed “lifelong resident.”

Lamp’s job consists of working with children ranging from preschool to fifth grade. This includes observing and/or solving their behavioral issues or informing parents about concerns she may have. Lamp also helps improve the learning environment by talking with teachers to better fit the educational needs of their students. She also has to complete paperwork, which mostly consists of referring students to certain classes and writing reports.

Working for the Green Hill Area Education Agency (GHAEA), Lamp serves Atlantic. She said that her schedule is very flexible, which is helpful as she is a wife and mother of two daughters. Addressing those who want to be a school psychologist, Lamp said, “don’t work in a school if you don’t love kids.”

Other requirements of her job include having good “verbal and nonverbal” communication skills and continuing to better her education every two years. The average yearly income of a psychologist is about $75,000.

Like every job, it poses challenges, but Lamp said, “If you’re ever having a bad day, go play with play-doh with the kindergarteners and it will immediately be better.”
