OPINION: Students need study halls

OPINION By Lillie Zablocki

Seniors Dalton Franken and Dalton Cook work in the media center. Students use study hall time for a variety of purposes.

The BLT (Building Leadership Team) met on Monday Dec. 10 to discuss changes that should be made to benefit AHS. One topic of discussion was the possibility of eliminating everyday study halls. This discussion not completely thought out.

First of all there are students taking challenging classes and also balancing extra-curricular activities that use their study hall to work on their homework. Only having a study hall every-other day while alternating gym would be troublesome to hardworking students.

Also, the school would have to give students more options of classes to take. If they take away a study hall, many students would not have another class to take, especially some of the upperclassmen. The necessity for more classes would also require more staff to be hired. I don’t think the school wants to go to all of this trouble just because a few students aren’t using their study hall wisely. Frankly, these students are most likely not using any of their time wisely, whether they’re in class or in study hall.

An option that has been thrown out is making it an application study hall. While nothing has been spoken of in detail, a few students suggested that in order to have an everyday study hall you have to go through an application process. I think this would be a good idea because the students that really need a study hall every day will apply and earn their right. The kids who teachers feel aren’t using an everyday study hall to their advantage will be declined that privilege. This option has more potential than just completely obliterating everyday study halls.

I know many students support everyday study halls because it helps them earn better grades. Without these study halls many students would be struggling to keep their head above water when it comes to homework. I think the school should be prepared for the crude results if they take away everyday study halls. Therefore, BLT should re-evaluate their discussion on terminating everyday study halls.
