One Question, 25 Answers: “Do we need study hall?”

By Lisa Gearheart

At Atlantic High School, the Building Leadership Team is a group of faculty and staff that discusses changes in the building, whether they are good or bad. This year, the BLT has begun discussing the issue of students not utilizing their study hall.“They are looking at doing something different with study hall because not all students use it efficiently,” said Derek Bair, the industrial tech teacher at AHS. Bair said that offering study hall only on the opposite day of a student’s P.E. or Weights class is an option. This change would affect many students at AHS. “Having less opportunity to be in a study hall is more opportunity to be in a class, which is why you’re in high school anyway,” Bair said. The different options for study hall are to be discussed with other faculty and staff. At earliest, this change would be in effect by the 2013-2014 school year.
