AHS FoodStand

By Bailey Walter and Benton Gearheart

The FCS class of first hour is holding a food stand fundraiser in room 217 Wednesday Nov. 14, Thursday Nov. 15, and Friday Nov. 16. The class is making healthy snacks to sell.

They first started with a no-bake cookie recipe altered with Nutella instead of peanut butter to make it healthy. Their second item is a cupcake altered to be considered healthy to eat. A third item is a refreshing smoothie with strawberries and bananas to quench your thirst.

The FCS instructor Meryl Hopper-Henningsen said she wanted to try something new. With all of the new food products being produced on the market, she thought that she could try and make her own with these students. This is a once-a-year activity for the FCS class, said Hopper-Henningsen. The students involved are grasping this idea pretty well and have worked hard to make the right nutritional labels for the products.

Freshman Darien Mills, a student in FCS, said, “I like it a lot.” Figuring out the recipes took about two days. “I made 16 dollars right of the bat!” said Mills. Mills would also like students to come and visit her and purchase some healthy snacks.

Another student, Nikita Vais, also in FCS said she did not like the idea at first but once they started cooking she enjoyed the fun. Vais said it took along time to come up with healthy recipes. Vias also said that the event went well and they sold out of most things.

Resource teacher Kathy Blazek said she went down at 8:15 to buy her items and came back with a cupcake, a smoothie, and a no-bake cookie. She said the idea is good one and to have it be healthy is another.

Friday is the final day for first-period classes to stop on down and purchase healthy snacks.
