Atlantic unable to capture third win against Harlan

In their quest for a third win against Harlan this season, and a chance get one step closer to a state championship, the Cyclones stopped the Trojans in their tracks Thursday night. The home-team on the scoreboard never led during the 73-52 Harlan victory.

The Trojans end their season with a 19-4 record.

The black-and-gold trailed 15-13 midway through the second quarter, but the Cyclones closed out the half on a 17-1 run to pull ahead for the rest of the game.

Senior Seth Lansman had 11 of Harlan’s first 12 points of the game. Senior Jared Juhl, who was sidelined with a leg injury for the majority of the season, scored 11 points in the first half. Lansman ended the game with 20 points and Juhl ended with 16.

Junior Dalton Franken, the Trojans leading scorer, scored only one point from a single free throw in the first half.  Franken ended the game with nine points.

Atlantic made only four field goals in the first half of the Class 3A District 2 final.

Junior Chad Christensen paced the Trojans with 11 points.

The Trojans missed their first five shots to open the second half.

Atlantic started to make shots after their slow start, but the Cyclones matched the Trojans blow-for-blow throughout the third quarter.

After a three-point field goal by Christensen, the Trojans trailed 41-24 with 2:53 to play in the third, but senior Zach Osborn made a three-pointer and Ben Bruck made three free-throws to start a 10-2 run to end the third quarter.

Harlan led 51-26 with one quarter to play.

Osborn scored 10 points to lead the Cyclones in the third quarter.

Thursday’s game was also won at the free-throw line. The Trojans made 10 of 19 attempts while the Cyclones made 25 of 32.

The Cyclones built their largest lead of the game at 26, 70-44 with just over two minutes to play.

Seniors Mitch Leiferman and Tyler Hovey scored the final four points of the ball game for the Trojans.
