Boys basketball jump out to fast start to down Tri-Center

by Anthony Robinson

The Atlantic Trojan boys’ basketball team jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led 16-2 before Tri-Center went on a 12-2 run to pull the game within four. The game never got closer, as the Trojans from Atlantic maintained their distance with the Tri-Center Trojans, winning 60-44.

“The first three minutes of the basketball game we’re pretty sharp defensively, pretty sharp offensively, of course the ball in going in the basket too, which makes the difference,” Coach Steve Blazek said after the game. “I thought we had a little bit of a let down [in the last] three or four minutes of the (first quarter ), probably took our time a little bit against the soft 2-3 zone; they’re almost daring you to shoot. They were going to make you beat them from the outside; we didn’t shoot it extremely well from the outside.”

Blazek added, “Give Tri-Center kids credit, no matter the score they always played hard.”

Juniors Sam Markham and Harrison Hoegh led the Trojans with 14 points a piece.

Atlantic led 36-20 at the half.

Both teams scored 24 points in the second half.

“(We didn’t have) a lot of intensity in the second half. We’re going to have to come out and play much better tomorrow night than we did tonight,” Blazek said after the game Monday night.

Senior Blake Esbeck finally found his stroke hitting two three-point baskets after being held scoreless on Saturday night against Norwalk. The Trojans made eight three-pointers as a team.

Atlantic only got to the line eight times during the game. The Trojans had shot at least 10 free throws in each of their first nine games of the season.

The Trojans host the Creston Panthers on Tuesday night.

Atlantic Scoring- Sam Markham-14; Harrison Hoegh-14; Gunnar Blum-10; Dalton Franken-9; Chad Christensen-7; Blake Esbeck-6
