Saturday, Oct. 22, 27 students traveled to Harlan to audition for All-State. Each student auditioned and were either chosen or recalled. Atlantic High School had two choir students chosen to be in the All-State Choir after the morning auditions, and six more were recalled. Band had one student recalled and later accepted.
Shelby Cooper was accepted to be in the All-State Band to play 3rd part clarinet. Only 10 clarinets were chosen from our district, Shelby was the first 3rd part.
Out of the 24 students who tried out for choir, six were recalled. Anthony Robinson, Eric Renner, Justin Somers, Josh Schorle, Preston Hoye and Halee Glenn were recalled. Preston Hoye was accepted after the recalls. He joins Nora Walker and Savannah Hoye who were accepted off their first audition.
Both directors agree that All-State is a very stressful day because everyone wants to make it in; you feel bad for those who do not make it.
Choir director Luke Johnson says, “When it comes down to it, there are many factors that play into students making it in or not. One judge may be looking for a voice type and we all know those are unique. All students are very deserving if they make it or not they put a lot of hard work into it.”

It is most definitely a nerveracking day! And I just want to mention that recalls are much worse than the initial audition. Why? Because in the initial audition your quartet (spelled right?) goes in front of one judge. In recalls, it’s you and only you in front of 3 judges instead of the one. So it’s very stressful.
