Trojans headed to playoffs

by Anthony Robinson

After the Trojans made easy work of the Red Oak Tigers (55-12), the black and gold faithful waited at the Trojan Bowl Friday night in anticipation of the final gun at the Winterset-Lewis Central game. With a Winterset win, Atlantic would qualify for the fourth and final playoff spot in district one of class 3A.

The Winterset Huskies trailed late, but scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for a dramatic 27-24 win over the Lewis Central Titans, which pushed the Trojans into the playoffs.

“We’re playing hot at the right time, we started off kind of slow and now everything’s clicking right before the playoffs, which is what you want as a team,” senior linebacker Derek Stork said.

The Trojans will travel to Hull Wednesday night to take on Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The Nighthawks come into Wednesday’s game with a record of 9-0.

Junior wide receiver Sam Markam is looking forward to Wednesday night. “I want to get up there and I want to show people what we’ve been working on and how hard we’ve worked and where we’re at as a team. I think we can play with teams like this. It’s just exciting to get up there and do our best.’

Atlantic scored 48 points in the first half of Friday night’s game against the Tigers. The Trojans outgained the Tigers 355 yards to 53 in the first two quarters of the game.

Senior Gunnar Blum had nine rushes for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Junior Harrison Hoegh completed nine out of ten passes in the first half for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

The clock ran continuously the entire second half because of the Trojans’ lead. At the half-way mark of the third quarter, head coach Tim Duff took out his starting offense and brought in his second team (JV) offense.

After one more Red Oak possession, the JV defense was brought into the game for Atlantic.

Sophomore Logan Steffens scored on a three-yard run for the last Trojan score of the game.
