Trojans jump out to early lead; end up falling to Glenwood

by Anthony Robinson

After jumping out with a two-games-to-none lead against the Glenwood Rams Tuesday night, the Trojanns found themselves on the wrong side of rallies throughout each of the final three games.  Atlantic fell three games to two: 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, and 8-15.

The Trojanns sported a new lineup Tuesday night.

“I was really proud of the group. They came out and played really well for the first time out playing together,” coach Chris Jahnke said after the game, “I have complete confidence in this group.”

After a see-saw battle in game one, the Trojanns were down 10-5 early in the second game. Atlantic came back and took a 12-11 lead before the Rams snatched momentum away from the home team, taking a 22-17 lead.

Junior Shelby Worth and senior Sam McConnell go for the block.

Despite the Rams’ sights on finishing off game two, the girls in black and gold fought back. The Trojanns ended the game on a 8-0 run to take game two away from Glenwood 25-22. The win gave the Trojanns a two-game lead in the best-of-five match.

With the Trojanns’ spirits high from the miraculous comeback in game two, Glenwood did their best at taking the momentum out of Atlantic’s hands. The Rams opened up  game three, 10-1. After a timeout by coach Jahnke, the Trojanns narrowed the gap to three, 13-10, Glenwood went on to win 25-17. The Trojanns never led in game three.

Atlantic looked to make a run in the fourth game after taking a 4-1 lead, but the Rams leap-frogged the Trojanns taking a 15-8  lead. Glenwood took game four 25-21, sending the match into a deciding game five.

In game five the Trojanns led 3-1 before giving up the lead and the match. The Rams won game five 15-8.

“The kids stayed strong and stayed positive in each game,” Jahnke said.

The AHS volleyball team travels to Council Bluffs on Thursday to take on the Abraham Lincoln Lynx.
