It’s a Spy’s Life, Part 11

It’s a Spy’s Life, Part 11

By: Liz Davidson

This a chapter-by-chapter book about a 16-year-old spy, Angela Darkmoon, as she finds her way in the mixed-up, topsy-turvy world she lives in.

Part 11

“Wow, I really messed up for once in my life,” Nali sulked, looking downcast.

“It wasn’t you Nali, the machines messed up. It’s what our hacker wanted us to think. He was the one who messed up, not you,” Nate assured the Forensic Criminalist.

“He’s right you know,” Clea Banks’ voice said from the elevator. No one had heard it open. She was leaning against the wall, her always-curly hair framing her brown cheeks, “There was nothing you could have done. And what’s done is done. We just need to move forward from this. We’ll find the hacker and we’ll find the murderer. It will just take time.” Angela got up to face the director.

“Angela and Nali, go home with Croston. I just got an email threatening the three of you. Jasper and Jonathon, go with them to protect them.”

“Uhm, Director Banks, I have to take care of my little sister, Isha, tonight. So I won’t be able to play bodyguard,” Jasper responded with a small frown on his face. Annalise, or Isha, was the sweetest six-year-old Angela had ever known. She got along with everyone and adjusted to any situation with ease.

“Take her along with you, Jasper,” Clea sighed, like the solution was obvious. Jasper opened his mouth to say something more, but shut it. He knew better than to talk back to the director. With that the director pushed the button on the elevators and when it opened, went in alone. She would be safe within the building she was the head honcho of.

“So, tonight, I’m supposed to try out a new horse I just bought. Angela, would you like to ride her for me? You are, after all, the better horseman, or should I say horsewoman, than I could ever be,” Croston asked with a twinkle in his eye, showing he was hiding something. Angela loved horses and would never pass down the opportunity to ride one.

“Of course. You know me. I’d never pass up an opportunity to ride. And you’re not that bad,” she said, smiling. Jasper’s face paled at the mention of having to ride. Isha may have a natural ability, but that didn’t mean Jasper had ever ridden before.  Angel smiled slyly at her co-worker.

“Just what we need, Angel on a horse,” Nate’s voice said from the walky-talky and Angela sighed.

“Remember, I know where your desk is,” Angela hissed into Nali’s walky-talky.

“And I know where your desk is located, too.”

“Yes, but I’m sneakier and you’ve never been able to successfully pull a prank on me.” At that Angela heard the walky-talky being turned off. Sighing, she turned back to her boss.

“So I’m not going home alone to get my things,” she said with a sigh.

“You’re right about that,” her boss replied with a smiled.

“Angela, you’re allowed to bring Jinx. We both know that the pack gets along extremely well with him for unknown reasons,” Croston told the spy, winking at her and smiling. Angela smiled back and nodded. Jake’s four dogs consisted of Packman (the Dogo Canario), Calico (the Brittany Spaniel), Junior (the Ibizan Hound), and Maizy (the Gordon Setter). Jinx, like with everything else, took everything in stride.

“Okay, so Angela, why don’t I take you to go get your things? Jasper can go get Isha and then pick up Croston and Nali,” her boss seemed to request; the spy knew better, it was a demand. She nodded and followed her boss to the elevators.

“Do you know what the “threat” exactly is?” Angela asked her boss as they made their way to the lobby. He shook his head. Angela just pursed her lips. She really wanted to know. Suddenly, a plan started to form in her head.

“I better not catch you trying to break into our director’s office.” Angela cringed and swore under her breath.

“You don’t know I’m planning that,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

“Only a person who doesn’t know you would fall for that.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah-“ Angela started but stopped when she walked out of the lobby.  Jonathon’s car was on fire.
