Sixteen students representing AHS at Girls’ State Basketball Tournament

Students selected to sing the national anthem.

by Anthony Robinson

Sixteen students from AHS will be headed to Des Moines on Friday, March 4 to perform the National Anthem at the girls’ class 4A semifinal round basketball game scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

This is the second year in a row students will represent AHS at the state tournament.

Earlier this winter, vocal music director Luke Johnson sent in a taped audition to the state for the opportunity to sing at the Well.  The 16 students selected to audition were individuals who have given a lot to the vocal music program, according to Johnson.  Each of these students has been involved in All-State auditions, show choir, and the musical.

“It’s one more awesome experience to put under these kids’ belts,” Johnson said.

The 16 students selected were sophomores Mikayla Somers and Eric Renner, juniors Nora Walker, Rob Nichols, and Anthony Robinson, and seniors Anna Smith, Samantha Koontz, Melanie Ehlert, Kristen Schuler, Pamela Fixmer, Sierra Worth, Mark Jacobsen, Aaron Johnson, Cody Ihnen, Joey Leinen, and Sam Johnson.
