The Atlantic Trojan wrestling team came home this weekend with four meadists from the 2011 Individual State Wrestling Championships. Josh Perkins, Brad Schwenke, Darrian Schwenke, and Tyler Doll received medals at the tournament.
As a team the Trojans finished in a tie for fourth place with 65 points.
At 130 pounds, senior Josh Perkins (38-9) earned a second place finish. Perkins was defeated by Brandon Sorenson from Denver-Tripoli 15-7 in the championship match on Saturday night. The second-place finish was his best finish in his four years at the state wrestling championships.
Senior Brad Schwenke (44-5) was defeated 11-3 by Kyle Risher of Centerville in the 140-pound championship match. Brad was nearly pinned early in the second period, but held on and competed the entire six minutes.
Freshman Darrian Schwenke (43-7) earned a fourth-place finish after losing to Derek Miller of Winterset in the consolation final at 103 pounds on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Tyler Doll (35-13) finished in eighth place at 189 pounds after losing to Tyler Walls from Clear-Creek Amana.
The 2011 state meet marks the first time in AHS history that two wrestlers have reached the finals.
