Walker wins Outstanding Female Soloist at DCG show choir competition

Nora Walker is embraced by Austin Johnk after receiving the award of Outstanding Female Soloist at the Dallas-Center-Grimes competition Saturday.

Junior Nora Walker was named Outstanding Female Soloist at the Dallas-Center-Grimes show choir competition on Saturday, Jan. 22.  Music director Luke Johnson estimates that Walker was one of  40 vocalists in eighteen different shows competing for the honor. Walker’s honor was a highlight of a very good day for the AHS Diversity and Premiere performance groups, participating in their first competition of the season.

Johnson said he was “really, really proud” of how both choirs performed.  He said the goal was to perform better than during the Swing Inn concert, and the choirs exceeded expectations.

The varsity show choir Premiere placed third as a team, only 14 points short of finishing second, which would have advanced the choir to finals.  The JV show choir Diversity finished second out of two prep groups that performed on Saturday.

The scoring for the varsity show choir was 185-136-174, which gave them a grand total of 495 out of 600 points possible.  Two of the judges marked Atlantic in second place.  “Being placed second by two judges really says something about what we are doing as a choir,” Johnson said.

The JV scoring was 155-92-146 which gave them a grand total of 393.

Sophomore Premiere baritone Eric Renner said, “I think we preformed well but there is still more we can improve on.”
