On Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 the Atlantic School Board voted unanimously in favor of an eight-period day schedule for Atlantic High School students for the 2011-12 school year, as presented by Principal Heather McKay.
Because of an increased requirement in physical education passed by the State of Iowa Chapter 12 section 256.11, every Iowa school will require each student to have physical education each semester they attend school from pre-k to grade 12.
A seven-period day, currently in effect, would require high school students make decisions on which classes and electives to drop in order to fulfill the physical education requirement.
According to McKay, under the new schedule, the school day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:19 p.m.

I like the idea of the extra gym period. However, I feel like weight-training should count as an option for “Lifetime Fitness B” instead of it being like PE for those of us who might enjoy weights more than PE.

I’m going to miss those extra 15 minutes of sleep but oh well gym is fun

i personally don’t like the idea of longer school days.

I dont think it is that big of a time difference and i love being physically active. I love to be physically fit and healthy because having a healthy body is also giving you a healthy mind.
