Two FFA members participated in the Beef Scholarship Extravaganza. Senior Adam Freund and junior Clayton Saeugling headed to the Iowa State University campus on Dec. 12 to compete for a scholarship prize of $1,500. The Beef Extravaganza is held for students that are interested in cattle production, and consisted of 22 teams with 53 total participants. The contest consisted of 10 stations: Handling & Health, Nutrition, Marketing, Seedstock, Keep/Cull Replacement Heifers, Job Interview, Industry Issues, Reproduction, Credit & Finance, and Beef Management.

Each station tested the participants knowledge and skills. The contest for 2014 was sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America, Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC, Iowa Beef Breeds Council, Iowa State University, Muir Embroidery, and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. The Atlantic FFA placed 13th in the contest. Saeugling said, “The Beef Extravaganza Contest was a lot of fun and great way to see all aspects of the beef industry. We got to compete at many different stations and had a great time doing it. I was also very happy with how we placed for our first time.”

The Atlantic FFA also helped host the annual Winter Ball at AHS in December. Members worked with the Atlantic Student Council to decorate the commons area in preparation for the dance. Also as tradition continued, the junior class FFA boys chose 7 junior class FFA girls to be on the Winter Ball Queen Court. These seven included juniors Laeni Pelzer, Erin Olsen, Sarah McCance, Lileigh Brown, and FFA members juniors Emily McDermott, Aubrey Schwarte, and Haley Carlson. Atlantic FFA members voted during the December meeting and the queen, Carlson, was crowned during the dance.
