Boys+Soccer+Take+2nd+in+First+Tournament

By Tanner Mauk and Matt Smith

The Trojans entered their first tournament of the year hoping to bring home some hardware for their trophy case, but didn’t end up carrying out their hopes. For the third year in a row, the Trojans showed a dominant performance in their first game, but couldn’t pull out a win in the finals.

In their first game of the tournament, the Trojans shutout the Carroll Tigers 6-0 and were able to pass the ball around the Tiger defense for most of the game. The Trojans had three different scorers. Junior Matt Smith, led the Trojans with 3 goals followed by sophomore David Thomsen, and junior Zach Brooks, with one goal apiece. The Tigers gave up a goal in the second half to make up the 6th point.

After a 45 minute break in between games, the Trojans took the field against the 5-2 Harlan Cyclones. The Harlan Cyclones defeated Kuemper 8-0 to reach the finals and were able to keep their shutout streak alive when they beat the Trojans 4-0. The Harlan Cyclones went up early with a goal from Eli Williams. The Trojan defense was able to hold the Cyclones out of the box for about 20 minutes when the Cyclones scored a deep goal, their last of the first half. Harlan was able the match their performance in the second half, scoring two more goals, while they were able to keep Atlantic scoreless.

The Trojans will have another chance against Harlan when they play them at home on Fri. May 3.
