OPINION: Sportsmanship in Football

By Sam Renaud

After the Seattle Seahawks clinched the NFC Championship game last Sunday, an uproar was started after Seahawks star cornerback was interviewed on the win.  He made some very bold and direct statements about an opposing player he competed against.  Many people were irate about how his actions on national television and what he had to say about his opponent.

I believe that Sherman is the best in the league.  What he said does reflect on how he played and how he ended up winning the match-up against Crabtree that game.  There had been jawing from both players in previous match-ups so I understand where the words he said came from.  I understand there’s a lot of emotion and adrenaline running during these games, so what he said isn’t completely unjustified.

Wyatt Saeugling said, “It was something I wasn’t expecting to see coming off the win.  It caught me off-guard, I didn’t know that was his personality.  I think he’s a great player, but I can understand where his outburst upset some fans and spectators.”

Tristen Benn said, “I think he’s a great player and he played a great game, but he didn’t need to react like that on national television.  The game was over, they had won, it was apparent that he out worked Crabtree, so leave it on the field.  His game spoke for him enough, he didn’t need the extra comments in the interview.”

Alexi Allen stated, “I don’t watch that much football, but when I saw the article I was surprised someone would act like that on television.  I thought it was really rude and the comments he said probably not even need, and I didn’t even watch the game.  I don’t care how good someone is, they should treat their opponent with respect, win or lose.”

With all that said, people are going to criticize Sherman, and they’re going to praise him.  Some people with understand where he’s coming from and others think he’s an idiot and should be punished.  It’s a matter of opinion of what’s right or wrong.  Here is the link to view the interview with Sherman.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wRt8d0YUF0
