Second Semester Kickoff

By Leah Tjepkes

Students were fortunate to have their first snow day on Monday Jan. 6, the day second semester was supposed to begin. Students started the following day with a 2-hour late start. Walking into the school, each student was given their new second semester schedule. While some classes were required to be taken the entire year, students could fill in the rest of their schedules with elective courses.

Guidance Counselor Craig Fredin stated the elective courses only offered second semester. In the Agriculture department, are horticulture and animal science taught by Mr. Miller. In the English department, the elective courses are pre-college composition taught by Mrs. Hartwig, composition 106 and interpersonal communications taught by Ms. Berryhill, and forensics taught by Mr. Smith. Other electives are marketing in the business department, child development, fashion and clothing, and international cuisine in the Family and Consumer Science department; ceramics and painting in the art department, and college statistics in the math department.

School sports resume again this semester with girls and boy’s basketball and boy’s wrestling. The girl’s team traveled to Harlan on Tuesday Jan. 7  while the boys played at home. That same week, boy’s wrestling had a meet in Coon Rapids Bayard Thursday Jan. 9.

Other schools activities that have began are musical rehearsals after school, SWIBA, jazz band competitions, show choir competitions, and vocal concerts.

Second semester rounds up the end of the 2013-2014 school year. The seniors will be graduating, the underclassmen will move a step older, and the 8th graders will make their way to the high school. Motivate yourself and others to end this school year with a bang!
