Benefits of Interpersonal Communications Class

Benefits of Interpersonal Communications Class

OPINION By Leah Tjepkes

Have you ever been sitting in a class and thought to yourself, “when will I ever use this stuff I learn in the real world?” In some classes, that might be true. But from the first day in Interpersonal Communications class, I have been benefitting from the information taught to me in my day-to-day life.

Interpersonal Communications, or also known as IPC, was first offered here at Atlantic High School in the second semester of the 2013-2014 school year. Ms. Berryhill has two classes, first and third period. It is considered an English course, and there are no prerequisites to take the class. As a senior, I am one of the first students who took the opportunity to take IPC this semester including students who range from freshman to senior. IPC teaches the students to understand how communication works and how someone should communicate in certain situations.

When asked to describe how IPC class is beneficial to a student, Berryhill replies, “A class that has direct impact on students’ lives. It will improve relationships in work, school, and personal lives by better understanding on how communication works. I love teaching the class because I feel like this will really help the students in life.” The class is a lot of hands on and group activities such as a Maslow Skit, a field trip to the kindergartens, and daily group discussion. It has been a month of IPC class and some of the students have noticed that they have been using what they’ve learned in everyday life. When asked what type of information from the class he has used outside of class, senior Dillon Cox said, “Noticing levels of communications with others throughout the school day.” He also knows that the class will help him understand and definitely improve his communication with others.

As a student, I am excited to learn more about the most effective ways to interact well with others in a one-on-one or small group conversation. I find that this will help me outside of school in everyday situations like communicating with strangers, peers, friends, family members, and future spouses. But I find that this class will help me understand the best way to communicate with future bosses and employees in a job.

The information taught in IPC can be used in all ways of communication. This class will benefit any student of any age. You’ll learn how to understand and communicate with others, what and what is not the right thing to say to people, and how to manage a conflict. So, if you want to be in a class where you learn stuff to use in the real world, IPC is the class for you.
