SWIBA

SWIBA

By Emily Yager

18 students auditioned for Swiba (SouthWest Iowa Bandmasters Association) honor band on Sat. Dec. 7. The concert will take place at Atlantic High School on Friday, Jan. 13.

Emily Yager, Sidney Gifford, Katie Darrow, Nadia Somers, and Seth Schulte were accepted into the 9-10 band. Breanna Kixmiller, Ben Parker, Preston Hoye, Nick Crews, Paige Sorensen, Justin Somers, and Mark Stinn were accepted into the 11-12 band. Katie Darrow and Preston Hoye received second chair placements and Nick Crews received first chair in his section.

Students prepared scales and two etudes for auditions. They arrived at Red Oak High School at around 9 a.m. and all auditions took place between 10-10:15 a.m. In the audition room, students drew a card with two scales, a flat and a sharp scale. They played the scales they drew, the concert B flat scale, and chromatic. The judges then told the students the cuts in the etudes, and they perform. Some areas that are judged are dynamics, articulation, and tone.

No senior this year is a six year Swiba member, which would mean the student would have to have made the honor band grades 7-12. Four year Swiba member senior Preston Hoye said his Swiba experience has been “fun”. Hoye said, “I’ve played with a bunch of different musicians from around southwest Iowa.”

Three year Swiba member freshman Katie Darrow said, “A lot of hard work and practice goes into auditioning.” Darrow was only one point away from being first chair. Her goal for next year is to be first.

Percussionist sophomore Corgan Petersen has yet to make Swiba. This year he auditioned on mallets. Petersen said that the audition process helps him become a better musician because he needs to work harder on the music and do more dynamics.
