On Fri. Dec. 6, 2013, the Atlantic/CAM Wrestling varsity squad traveled to Humboldt for the first tournament of the 2013-2014 season. With four open weight classes, they still came out with a second place finish out of eight teams along with four champions. Dillion Cox, Darrian Schwenke, Tyler Christensen, and Reid Nichols were the four Trojan champions. Carter Cox, Jacob Johnson, Zac Stork, and Marshal McDermott finished in third place with Jez Phippen in fourth place and Keagan Hosfelt placed 7th.
Junior Marshal McDermott said, ”I thought I did pretty good. I didn’t think I was going to place.”
Senior Darrian Schwenke said, “I’d say I did pretty good, I worked more on pinning to get more team points since we only had ten guys, most of us focused on that.”
Assistant Coach Drew Duff commented that it went well with only taking ten kids. He continued saying, “ With placing second obviously we did pretty well, the effort and attitudes were good.
The Trojan’s have one returning state qualifier and six returning lettermen. Battling with four open weight classes, the team hopes to go undefeated in duals. A team goal was to be Humboldt champions although coming in close, they trailed behind Humboldt with a second place finish. With 66 days left until the state meet, other team goals are to win the Hawkeye Ten Conference, get six wrestlers to the state meet, and make it to state team duals again.
The Trojans travel to Oakland for another tournament on Sat, Dec. 14 starting at 10 am.
