Teach the Elderly to Play Xbox

Teach the Elderly to Play Xbox

By Lauren Krogman

The perfect day: playing Xbox and missing school! A new program at AHS offers this opportunity to gamers who are willing to help our community.

The program, introduced by English teacher Maria Oltmans, involves teaching senior citizens how to play Xbox Kinect.  The program is called “LIFE”, which stands for “Living Well Through Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise”.  The goal of the program is to teach a group of ten elderly men and women to play Xbox Kinect sports.  This will let the seniors learn something new and fun to do with their grandchildren.

The Heritage House and Atlantic Nursing and Rehab will be the “host sites” for the new program.  Any seniors who are sixty years and over are able to participate, but do not have to be a resident at the host sites to get involved.  The program lasts eight weeks and the trainers will come two times a week.  The first two weeks will be “getting to know you” sessions.  After a few more weeks, the teaching of the game will begin.

To go forward with the program, 2-3 student “trainers” are needed from the high school.  Students must be ages 16-25 and should be handy with an xbox.  If you are under the age of eighteen, you will need a permission slip signed by a parent.  Students will be able to pick their own time to go, either in study hall or after school.  If interested, see Ms. Oltmans to sign up.
