Officer Turns Substitute Teacher

Officer Turns Substitute Teacher

By Steph Fruend
On Tues. Nov. 24, Devin Hogue a police officer doubled as a substitute teacher for math teacher Sheila Hayden. Hogue is a patrol officer for the Atlantic Police Department. He began substituting so he had the opportunity to interact with kids outside of being a policeman.

Hogue, a graduate of Shenandoah High School in 2005 , graduated from Simpson in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. His wife, Jodie Hogue, is a kindergarten-1st grade teacher in Atlantic. As he was working as a patrol officer in Atlantic, Hogue took a two day course at Iowa Western to get a license to practice as a substitute teacher. This course covers middle school and high school levels along. However, he had to have a few observational hours to begin substituting. As a patrol officer and through the police department, Hogue works with lots of kids, including summer camps and Halloween safety. Another program he is involved with at the school is the Alice Training with the teachers.

Taylor Jessen who has worked with Officer Hogue in the elementary schools for Halloween safety said, “He’s pretty nice and fun to work with.”

Hogue stated that he felt his first day went pretty well.
