Student Nominated for Iowa Association of Student Council

Student Nominated for Iowa Association of Student Council

By Meghan Reilly

Atlantic High School sophomore Laeni Pelzer recently nominated herself to the Iowa Association of Student Councils. IASC is ”a non-profit student leadership organization that promotes service, citizenship, character, integrity, and academics.” In order to nominate herself to be elected to the IASC, Pelzer had to fill out an application, write a one page essay as to why she would make a good electee, and send in two letters of recommendation, one from a school employee and the other from AHS’ student council advisor. On Oct. 27, she will have an interview in front of 26 people and the following day will find out if she has been elected at the state conference.

In order to nominate yourself, the only qualifications you were required to meet were being a current sophomore in high school and an active member in your schools student council. A total of eight councils are taking part in this years election. Positions on the board of the IASC include President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, President-Elect (for the following year), 1st Vice President Elect and 2nd Vice President elect.

Pelzer said she is very nervous and anxious about the upcoming election, and isn’t quite positive as to what she’s getting herself into. However, she is, “very excited at this new opportunity. If I was elected it would be a huge honor and I would be ready to tackle anything that comes along with it.”
