Trojan Diner

Trojan Diner

By Tanner Mauk

Thursday, September 19, during 4-6th periods, many students and Foods teacher Meryl Hopper were in the Foods room preparing a meal. They would serve the meal to many teachers, community members, and even Iowa’s board of Education. All of the work they put in was for the first Trojan Diner of the 2013-2014 school year.

Trojan Diner is when students use their knowledge about preparing and serving food and drink to the public. The whole Foods 2 class works at this event. Some students prepare the food, some serve the food, and one student seats the guests at their tables located in the Foods 2 classroom, while Hopper helps with everything. This time around, the head chefs were Lauren Krogman, Josie Anzalone, and Allie Siggins, all three students of Atlantic High School. Other chefs that cooked side dishes and desserts were Kerran McFadden, Corey Whitt, Tyler Thomas, Tristen Benn, Matt Mills, Monica Witzman, Kate Fulk, Courtney Jensen, Sam Renaud, Tanner Mauk, and Kyle Krueger. Thomas, who helped make the drinks, said “It was a good and fun experience.”

The menu that they made included meatloaf cupcakes as the main dish, parmesan roasted green beans and cornbread as a side dish, a virgin strawberry Daiquiri as a drink and to finish the meal, Rolo cheesecake bars.  Krogman and Siggins collaborated with each other to come up with the menu. To eat this meal it costs $8 and about 30 minutes of your time. The meal isn’t available to students.

Most people said that they enjoyed the whole experience and they look forward to doing it again. Renaud seated people in the “dining room” as well as helping out as a cook. When asked what he thought about the whole experience he said, “It was a lot of fun and quite tiring.”

The next time that Trojan Diner will be up and running is Oct. 10. There will be a whole new menu and three new head chefs working to make a good eating experience for all the people who come to enjoy it.
