Has window chalking gone too far?

by Cassandra Long and Paige Lank

When looking at the cars in Atlantic High School’s parking lot, many people will see cars covered in chalk.  Sometimes it’s encouraging things like “Beat the Rams,” but this isn’t always the case.

Window chalking has become a common sight on many high school students’ car windows.  Although it’s not a big crime, window chalking can be considered vandalism if the victim decides to take it to the police.

Sometimes window chalking can be taken too far.  Many kids have noticed their cars covered in trash.  Some kids have gone as far as putting “Sex Offender” on other students’ cars.  Name-calling isn’t just in the hallways or on Facebook, but window chalking can also be used as a form of bullying.

Everybody with a car is at risk of being window chalked because the chalk is easy to get and most of the time, chalking is easy to do.  Most stores like K-Mart, Walmart and even Target carry many different colors of window chalk available to anybody who can afford them. Walmart sells window calk for less than three dollars a tube.

Window chalking doesn’t always happen on school grounds, so many times kids can only go to the police if they wish to do something about it.  Getting it off your windows is easy to do, but it’s possible that once the window chalk is off your windows, someone will strike again with a fresh tube.

Even though many students don’t go to the police or administration, antagonistic comments are still a crime and can hurt people’s feelings.  Minden Jones said her car has been chalked for cheerleading and others have put “Camel Toe(Cammi) hearts Mindy(Minden).”

When asked, Cammi Nelson said she drew “images” on friends’ cars for fun.
