Ask Anonymous – Hats in School?

Question: Why do some people consider wearing a hat indoors as disrespectful? How many teachers care about hats indoors? Why or why not?

As a student, I understand the confusion about why wearing hats during school is considered “disrespectful.” The opinions on this issue vary widely. If someone were to walk into my house today with a hat on, I wouldn’t feel offended if they didn’t remove it. However, it bothers me when people do not remove their hats during the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance. I think removing hats during moments of respect to our country shows honor to the United States. Art teacher Pat Wiederen said that keeping hats on during the school day is “just bad manners. It’s disrespectful to the owners of the home or business. It shows a sign of casualness that does not belong in a business setting.” On the contrary, Miss Huggins stated her opinion about wearing hats during school. Check out what she had to say in the video above!

Manners expert Emily Post’s website also lists the places where hats are acceptable for both men and women. Click Here!
