On Monday night March 11, 2013, the Atlantic School Board voted to change the name of the girls sports teams at AHS from Trojanns to Trojans. Four of the five school board members voted to change it, with the exception of Josh McLaren.
McLaren said because it has been tradition he decided to vote against the name change. “It will get rid of the distinguishing difference between guys and girls sports,” says Mclaren.
The student body filled out a questionaire a couple months ago asking for their opinions on it. Meghan Plambeck said, “A lot of times people from Harlan ask me if my shirt is spelled wrong when it says ‘Trojanns,’ so I think it is a good thing it got changed.” Hopefully this name change will bring some clarity to surrounding schools.
Uniforms and signs will be updated to “Trojans,” but this process will not be immediate.
Go Trojans!
