Many students take summer school if they want to graduate early. Summer school is primarily used to not get behind in credits.

Summer schools isn’t free, my many factors contribute to how much you actually have to pay. If you are wondering about how much it does cost you need to go to your guidance counselor and find out.

English and history classes are available. AHS is also working to get a math class and some other electives.

Steve Baier’s physics student are participating in their anual cardboard boat project. The boats could have been one-man or two-man. Boats were to be completed Monday, May 6 and displayed in the Multi-Purpose building. These boats sailed on Tuesday, May 7 at Nishina Hills golf course in Atlantic. The students will be gone from sixth to eighth period.

The boat had special requirements. The students could only use cardboard to build them. They could use duct tape, glue, or caulk to hold them together. No metal fasteners, string, or zip ties could be used.

The boats were either one-man or two-man, depending on whether partner work was done. All one-man boats raced other one-man boats and two-man boats raced two-man boats.

This project is worth 100 points. The boats were graded on speed, maneuverability, design, and the final race results. The students first designed and built a boat. Each class looked over the boats and determined which one they thought win. Then on Tuesday, the students, along with Baier, loaded up their boats and headed to the Nishna Hills Golf Course to test them.

If the boat made it across the pond, the students received at least a “B.” The determining grade was the race back. The boats raced back against each other to see who was victorious and would get the best grade.

On Friday, May 3, the AHS band and choir students travelled to Harlan to perform sets of songs they had spent a month preparing. Chamber choir, Concert choir, and the band all performed.

Choir director Jennifer Gaesser took two choirs with her: the JV Concert Choir and the Varsity Chamber Choir. Concert Choir received a 31 division II excellent rating for their songs “Come to Me, O My Love” arranged by Allan Robert Petker and “Dreams of Thee” arranged by Eric William Barnum. Chamber Choir received a 36 division I superior rating for their songs “Come to the Music” by Joseph M. Martin and “In Remembrance” arranged by Jeffery L. Ames.

Gaesser said she was very happy with the results of Large Group. “Everybody worked hard and there’s always room for improvement.” To prepare for next year, Gaesser will not pick music for Large Group until she sees the abilities the next set of choirs obtain up to Christmas.

Band director Jarrod O’Donnell took the concert band to Large Group Contest. They received a division II excellent rating for their two songs: “Flieger Marsch” arranged by Hermann Dostal and “Gathering the Ranks of Hebron” arranged by David Holsinger.

Large Group Contest was both the band’s and choir’s last school performance of 2012-2013 school year.
