When does Twitter go too far? – OPINION

OPINION – By Landon Stark

Many people at Atlantic High School use a Twitter account on a daily basis. Twitter has good uses: Teachers can use it as a way to connect with their students outside of class and keep them up to date on class work. Students also use Twitter as a way to communicate with their fellow classmates, for example, encouraging others to go to school events.

But what should be done when Twitter is used for the wrong reasons? People can use Twitter however they please, but there is a certain boundary line of right and wrong ways to use Twitter that some people tend to cross and use it for the wrong reasons. People tend to use Twitter to get a reaction out of people by sending offensive tweets.

Could this affect us having Twitter access in the future? Though Twitter may have an intended purpose, a way to keep people social, people use Twitter as a way to do just the opposite. When people take Twitter and use it as a way to bully others it makes us question if we should be allowed to use it at school. So should students be allowed to use Twitter at school, or should it be blocked?

There have been multiple Twitter fights among many AHS students within the past month. Does this mean there is a growing number of people abusing Twitter? I feel as more people abuse Twitter repeatedly, the school will begin to have a growing concern about students and possibly block Twitter. If this happens, they could even go as far as adding a new section to the student code of conduct about the use of Twitter.

In my eyes when you make fun of someone on the internet, it is the same as making fun of them in person. The only difference is that it is much easier to make fun of someone when you don’t have to say it to their face. The number of people being insulted has been increased by Twitter because anyone can tweet people.

I believe if people don’t begin to use Twitter for the right reasons, these consequences may be put into action. So is it really worth crossing the line of right and wrong when you can lose your Twitter privileges at school? #twitterboundaries
