Why Are Dances Not Well Attended? – OPINION

By Lisa Gearheart

An abundant amount of people complain about the lack of things for an AHS student to do on the weekends. Although this may be true, the AHS Student Council puts on a dance once every few months for the whole school to attend, yet the attendance is at an all time low. Why is this? Are people afraid they may look goofy dancing? This is a question that is still unanswered.

Our student body should take advantage of the fact that the Student Council takes their time to prepare these dances for their enjoyment. Yet, not many take advantage of this. Maybe students don’t come because they don’t like the songs that are played, or possibly the dancing style. This is when you need to put on your big kid pants and request a song, or start a different style of dancing.

How could we, as a student body, improve the attendance of our dances? It is possible that if students requested things for the student council to include at the dances, they would have more ideas on what the student body expects to see at a dance. Supplying the DJ with a list of songs at the beginning of the dance could be a possible solution for “better” music. If you don’t like grinding, join the group of line dancers who are always willing to teach you the steps. If you are the type that likes to just go crazy, teach others to go crazy with you. Student Council wants dances to be the talk of the school for awhile, but without the cooperation from students, that is not possible. When you go to a dance, you want to be yourself and you want it to be fun. All you have to do is make it fun!
