Uniforms, eight periods, and no coats? Oh my!

Coats are officially against the dress code; however, at times they're allowed.

A goal of AHSneedle.com is to provide readers with accurate information about school- and student-related issues. Lately in Atlantic High School, rumors have been circulating about next semester.  These rumors include having to wear uniforms, being unable to wear coats and sweat shirts, and switching to an eight-period day.

Heather McKay, AHS principal, says the uniforms rumor is false.  She hadn’t heard anything about requiring uniforms or preventing students from wearing sweatshirts; she said these were both untrue, and to her knowledge hadn’t been discussed.

However, McKay reminds students that wearing coats in school is against the dress-code policy.   She stated that when students get cold and put on their coats, it is understandable, but it is still against our dress code.  Administrators tend to deal with wearing coats on a case-by-case basis.

When asked about these rumors, junior Rob Nichols said, “I heard we can’t wear coats, sweatshirts, or letter jackets, but I didn’t believe all of it; I believed the coats part though.”

Although the dress-code rumors were completely false, the eight-period class day may have some truth behind it.  McKay states, “We are looking at a new schedule for next year, but we are not sure yet.”  The reasoning for the possible schedule change is because of the requirements of Iowa’s Core Curriculum.  Starting next year, students will be required to have a set amount of physical activity weekly.

Change is common in high school, which may cause rumors.  To make your life easier, find the truth behind rumors.

Having the extra class period has it’s ups and downs. The downside is that kids probably won’t enjoy having to be at school longer. The plus side to this is that the extra period to allow for PE will help fix the obesity problem in the US.

I’m so glad I’m graduating at the end of the year so I don’t have to take PE!
