Premiere Show Choir Learns New Choreography

Choir teacher Jennifer Gaesser works with choreographer Ben Eklund.

Atlantic’s Premiere show choir learned the dance to a new song on Tuesday, Oct. 30.  Practice started at 3:45 p.m. and lasted until around 7 p.m.

Premiere’s choreographer Ben Eklund came to the high school to teach the show choir the dance to “Boogie Shoes” by KC and the Sunshine Band. Ben has also choreographed the songs “Soul Man” by the Blues Brothers, “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele, and “Steal Your Rock and Roll” from the musical Memphis for Premiere.

Choir teacher Jennifer Gaesser said she loved the choreography. She also felt that the choreographer left the show choir in a good position to compete. “I feel like we’re heading in the right direction. With a little more focus we can be good. I’m proud of the work the kids have been putting in so far,” said Gaesser.

The boys move their feet to the rhythm of “Boogie Shoes” along with Ben Eklund.

The choreography for “Boogie Shoes” consists of fast movements at a quick tempo. Sophomore Ben Parker said that the choreography is active and fun. Junior Morgan Munsey said, “You move a lot and it’s epic!”

Some changes have taken place throughout this past year. The previous choir teacher Luke Johnson left to teach vocal music at Iowa Western Community College, and new choir teacher Jennifer Gaesser arrived at the high school, and the past choreographer Anne Chapman was replaced with new choreographer Ben Eklund. “The choreography this year is way better,” said senior Danielle Lambert. “I thought it was a little hard at first, but then I got used to it,” said Lambert.

Ben Eklund tells the girls how important it is to give 100 % while dancing.
With all the new changes come new expectations for Premiere show choir. Parker said he was physically and mentally tired from learning the new choreography as he left the session. “I feel that there are a good set of expectations for the varsity show choir,” said Parker. Munsey said he was exhausted when he left the choreography session. Lambert said she felt overwhelmed when she left, “I think that we are going to do very good and the expectations could be higher.”
