In the spotlight: Acting at AHS

By Shelby McKinley.

The fall play is one of many performing opportunities at AHS.

Seniors Shelby Cooper and Tom Stinn played the parents of a teenage alcoholic in the Nov. 2-3 production of “The Late, Great Me.”

Cooper has been involved in drama since her freshman year. She said, “It’s really a fun experience. You get to pretend to be someone you’re not.”

Stinn has also participated in plays throughout all four years of high school. He realized he enjoyed acting at a young age. “I’ve been in traveling theater productions since third grade when they were in the summer. Then I did the fall plays here at AHS.”

The highlight of this year’s play for Cooper was “being able to have had Shuman direct all of my plays, and I’m glad to have him direct my last play.”

Seniors Shelby Cooper and Tom Stinn play the parents of an alcoholic teen in this fall’s drama production. Both Cooper and Stinn have been active in drama all four years at AHS.

Stinn played the role of a middle-aged man in this year’s production. Stinn said, “I play George Peters and I’m Geri Peter’s father.” Stinn said his character is not on stage a lot, “but when I am, I’m in crucial scenes.”

Stinn also said, “and I’m kind of a distant father.”

Cooper talked about her role being serious. She said its not always easy “being serious all the time and not laughing when I’m supposed to be upset.”

Stinn hopes that the audience gets the moral of the story. He said, “I hope they walk out with a differnt outlook on underaged drinking.”

Both Cooper and Stinn had great things to say about director Terrence Shuman. Stinn said, “It’s kind of hard to describe to people that don’t know him. There are times where he’s funny and joking around, and there are times where he is strict like this week. Since it’s production week, we showed him that we are ready and we just want to make his last play his best.”
