New Student Council adviser: McKay

By Malachi Wickman

The AHS Student Council has a change in advisers.

Heather McKay, Atlantic High School  principal, is now also the adviser for Student Council.  McKay was already meeting with the officers, she said, and wanted to help out the previous adviser,  Elizabeth Huggins, so it felt natural to her to step in.

Huggins, an English teacher in Atlantic High School, was asked why she stepped down.  Huggins stated, “It was a decision based on being a second year teacher; I needed to focus on my classroom, so both Student Council and my classroom can get what they deserve.”

Student Council secretary, junior Ian McNees, commented, “I liked having Huggins, but McKay will be good.  It’s nice having the principal there to approve and disapprove everything.”

McKay is now working to give the AHS Student Council more of a voice for the students.  She is also working to keep them involved.  The Student Council “trick or treated” for nonperishable food items Sunday, Oct. 31.

They also recently went to a state conference, and have some “great new ideas.”  McKay thinks the conference was beneficial to the council because they saw how much they do compared to other schools’ student councils.

This article sounds as if respect, co-operation, and encouragement are being practiced at the Atlantic High School. Thanks for the information. Janet Hoegh
