Mess in parking lot causes concern

By Meghan Plambeck

Students may not be allowed to gather in the parking lot to socialize after home football games if the lot isn’t kept clean. Principal Heather McKay informed the AHS student council at the meeting Tuesday morning.

After last week’s homecoming game against ADM the parking lot was said to have had a lot of trash and the remains of a tiger stuffed animal. McKay called the trash “unacceptable.”

McKay said that she loves having the students gather at the parking lot because of the safety, so she doesn’t want to end that. She was also clear that she wants it to remain mainly unchanged, saying “I don’t want to have to regulate it too much.”  However, she said that if the littering doesn’t improve, the police will be at the parking lot to prevent students from gathering there.

The members of the student council discussed possible ideas to solve the problem, and thought perhaps trash cans could be in the parking lot to give the students somewhere to throw away their trash. Council member Maren McNees thought that students probably still wouldn’t use them if they were available.

Junior Sierra Smith hangs out at the parking lot after games and said, “I think it’s disrespectful to the people who have to clean it, but we’re just kids so there will be trash.” Smith said she would be willing to put her own trash in a trash can. “I think if there were trash cans up there, they would use them.”

If there are any suggestions on ways to solve this problem, ideas can be put into the student concern box that is located in the library.
