By Josh Schorle

The junior girls’ dodgeball team beat the sophomores in a close final match Thursday, Sept. 27.

The juniors won the first match, but the sophomores came back to win the second. In an intense third match, the juniors defeated the sophomores and were declared champions of the 2012 Homecoming Dodgeball Tournament.

Junior Kristin Johnk said, “I was very excited after we won because it was the first time our class had ever won a dodgeball tournament.”

All four classes began playing the first round of dodgeball during Seminar on Tuesday. In order to advance to the next round, the team had to win two out of three matches. The juniors quickly defeated the freshman in two games in the first round. The sophomores upset the seniors’ team in three very close matches.

The next round began on Thursday afternoon during Seminar. The seniors faced the freshman first, beating them in 2 games.

The freshmen played the seniors Thursday in the consolation round, where the seniors took third place.  Spirit points were awarded based on their placement in the tournament.

The junior girls at Atlantic High School won the Homecoming dodgeball tournament after defeating the sophomores in the championship match last week.

The dodgeball tournament took place at the high school gym during seminar during the week of Homecoming. The tournament began on Monday, Sept. 24, during Seminar class. Before the tournament began, rules were read to the audience and to the girls who were going to participate.  A new rule this year stated that a team needed to win two out of three games.

The juniors first defeated their freshmen opponents in two quick games. This was the first time the class of 2014  won a game. Junior Ashli Walker said, ”We did great. I couldn’t believe that that was the first gave the juniors have ever won as a class.”

The seniors and sophomores then played, with the sophomores defeating the seniors in two tug-of-war matches.  The juniors and the sophomores were then set to play for the championship on Thursday.

Competition on Thursday began with the consolation match between the seniors and freshmen. The seniors outplayed the freshman to obtain third place.

The championship game followed. The first game was won by the juniors, but the sophomores fought back to win game two.  During the final match, the juniors pulled ahead with the number of players on the court and got the victory to clinch the championship title.

The juniors won with only nine girls playing, since Meghan Plambeck went home sick that day.

Their success on the dodgeball court contributed to the juniors’ spirit point total.  The class of 2014 went on to win the week’s spirit competition. The Spirit Stick was presented at the football game on Sept. 28 to cap of the exciting week for the juniors at AHS.
