Second period today at AHS, class was interrupted by the sound of fire alarms. Students were evacuated to the front parking lot until the all-clear was given. Teacher Paul Iekel was notified by the student who found the fire. The fire was in a trash can in the girls’ bathroom near the Spanish room.
Iekel said that the trash can was not on fire, but was smoldering when he got there. He was unsure of who started the fire, and couldn’t recall the name of who found it.
The student pulled the fire alarm by the chemistry room to alert the school around 8:55 AM. Iekel tried to get the situation under control by putting water into the trash can. “We held [the trash can] up to the sink and were scooping the water into the basket,” said Iekel. When assistant principal Josh Rasmussen arrived on the scene, he took the trash can outside.
Students were sent back to class at 9:10 AM.
Principal Heather McKay declined comment at this time.
