Chemistry students work their magic

By Ryan Beymer

Nancy Jenkin’s Advanced Chemistry class will be performing the yearly chemistry magic show during the last few weeks of school.  The magic show consists of students performing reactions and experiments in front of third-graders.  The tricks vary from fire to ice and cause reactions to create a show.
Students of the class started working on projects April 23 in preparation for five magic shows.  The Advanced Chemistry students began by choosing projects to do for the show.  The students have been preparing chemicals and testing their experiments to be ready by show time.  Junior Jared Fulk explained this process as, “It let’s us choose what we want to do.”
When asked about how the third-graders react to the magic show experiments, Jenkins said, “They absolutely love them and are amazed.”

The magic shows will happen on five Tuesdays or Thursdays with separate classes coming to AHS from Washington each day.  Junior Tyler Fischer said, “I’m looking forward to performing in front of the kids.”
Junior Scott Caslow is doing experiments that include multicolored flames and collapsing cans.  When asked about what he was looking forward to the most, Caslow said, “Watching the kids’ faces light up.”

Magic Creation - Junior Jared fulk pours chemicals to create oxygen as Tyler Fischer watches. The oxygen was used to create an explosion in a bottle.
Concentrate - Junior Tyler Fischer measures out chemicals into a beaker. Fischer was making a silver bottle.
