AHS choir students are composing rhythms to perform during the upcoming Show Choir Blast on April 28. According to choir director Luke Johnson, his students “don’t always have the opportunity to do a wide variety of musical activities because we are driven by a school calendar of performances.” Johnson decided to incorporate musical composition into the choreography for one of Premiere’s show choir songs, “Step In Time” from the Disney musical Mary Poppins. Students will use a variety of unusual objects as percussion instruments, similar to the show “Stomp.” Johnson said students will make music with “anything and everything we can find” including lampshades, exercise balls, and “everything we can put our hands on.”Senior Anne Chess said, “I think it adds a new spin to our show. Instead of just dancing, we’re adding a new element.”
Junior Matt Iekel said, “I think it has potential to be pretty good, we just need more people assigned to basic and complicated rhythms.”
