The Atlantic Trojanns jumped out to a fast five to nothing lead after two field goals by junior Mackenzie Holmes, but their lead was quickly erased by an eight to one run by the Monarchs. Atlantic and Denison were tied at 10 after one quarter, but the Monarchs took control of the game and defeated the Trojanns 67-45, Friday night.
Atlantic falls to 2-9 on the season with the loss.
Denison didn’t have a size advantage over the Trojanns, but the Monarchs controlled the boards all game. The Monarchs had multiple trips with more than one opportunity for a basket.
Atlantic was outscored 26-11 in the second quarter, as Denison took a 36-21 halftime lead.
The Trojanns attempted only three field goals the entire second quarter.
Denison took their largest lead of the game, 50-30 with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter.
Atlantic got a close as 12 points, 54-42, during the final quarter.
The Trojanns didn’t shy away from contact during Friday’s game. Atlantic made 17 of 30 free-throw attempts.
Atlantic hosts Tri-Center on Monday night in the opener of the girl-boy Pink Out doubleheader.
