Kuemper proves too much for Trojanns

by Anthony Robinson

The Trojanns made 10 more free throws than field goals in Friday night’s game against Kuemper Catholic. But the 14 free throws and four field goals resulted in only 24 points in the 68-24 loss.

The home town ladies never led during the game.

Kuemper  jumped ahead early and took a 20-3 lead into second quarter.

The Trojanns three points in the first quarter all came from shots at the charity stripe.

Atlantic started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to pull the game within 10 points. After a free throw by senior Ali Krogman, the Trojanns trailed by single digits, 24-15, for the final time in the game.

Kuemper ended the half on a 13-2 run.

At the break Atlantic was 12-18 from the free throw line. The Lady Knights matched their effort, going  12-15 from the stripe.

Sharp-shooting junior Lexi Albrecht led Kuemper with 15 in the first half.  Albrecht hit only one three-pointer in the second half, but the Lady Knights found other contributors.

Kuemper had four players finish with double-digit point totals after having only one player in double-figures in the first half.

The Trojanns were outsized, allowing the Lady Knights to snag many offensive rebounds giving them more than one opportunity to score every time down the court.

Kuemper outscored the Trojanns 31-7 in the second half.

Mackenzie Holmes led the Trojanns with 12 points and three of the four field goals of the game.

The Trojanns are on the road at Clarinda on Tuesday night.
