Size dominates game against Carroll

by Anthony Robinson
with Liz Guttenfelder

In a game in which size mattered, the Trojanns were at a disadvantage. The Carroll Tigers featured two girls taller than six feet in stature. The Trojanns stuck with Carroll in the early stages of the game, but the Tigers took over in the second quarter en route to a 70-46 win over the Trojanns Monday night.

Junior Brittany Holdsworth (6′ 2″) and senior Lindsey Schulz (6′) combined to score 40 of the Tigers points.

Senior Alex Hartwig led Atlantic with 12 points. Hartwig shot 6-10 from the charity stripe.

The Trojanns were aggressive all night. They made 21 of 33 free-throw attempts.

Atlantic was able to apply defensive pressure in the first quarter, keeping the game close, 11-10 Carroll, at the end of the first eight minutes. Neither team led by more than three points in the first.

The Tigers started the second quarter on a 12-2 run. Carroll’s size started to come into play during the second quarter. The Tigers grabbed every rebound and turnover that was just out of reach of the Trojanns’ hands.

Atlantic trailed 36-22 at the half.

The Trojanns shot 11-17 from the line in the first half.

The start of the second half was dominated by two players: Schulz for Carroll and Hartwig for Atlantic. Schulz scored the first seven points of the third quarter for Carroll, and Hartwig scored the first six for the Trojanns.

The Tigers led by 22 at the end of the third, 55-33.

Carroll led by as many as 28 in the final quarter before the Trojanns scored two easy lay-ups to end the game.

Junior Abby Johnson saw court time in the fourth quarter and commented on her team’s strengths. “I think we are better on the defensive side, and we made more free throws.”  Johnson also commented on the Trojanns’ weaknesses. “We didn’t run through our plays very well and we turned the ball over too much.”

Atlantic JV beat Carroll 41-21.  Sophomore Kristen Johnk said, “I think we did pretty good, but having a Monday game was a learning experience.”

Atlantic travels to Adel tonight to take on the ADM Tigers.
