Stealing at Atlantic High School

By Paul Honke

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2007 three percent of students age 12-18 reported a theft at school during the previous six months.

Atlantic High School has dealt with thievery before. Senior Chris Kinney said his shorts were stolen. Senior Tyler Hovey reported that his cell-phone and keys were stolen. Two years ago AHS made the news when money was reported missing during a gym class. The resulting strip search of students led to a $300,000 payment from the district to the girls whose rights were violated by the search. So far, 12 thefts have been reported during the new school year.

According to the student handbook (page 22) anybody caught “unlawfully takes and carries away any school property or property of others” will receive on first offense, a five-day in school suspension, notification of parents, and possible legal action may be taken. Restitution is required. Students caught with a second offense will be referred to the Board of Education for disciplinary action.

One of the most common places for theft is the locker rooms. Casey Pelzer, one of the Lifetime Fitness teachers, said that four or five students have told him that they had personal belongings stolen from them this year. Pelzer also said that there are likely more incidents that are not being reported.

“How stuff gets stolen half the time is when students leave their stuff on the benches where someone can steal it while they aren’t looking,” said Pelzer.
