    Eight Period Days

    By Paul Honke

The new school year has much to offer, such as new students, new teachers, as well as new coaches. But this year the new change that has everyone talking is the new class schedule.

At Atlantic High School the biggest change so far is the addition of a new class period, making a former seven-class schedule into an eight-class schedule. The decision to add another period was made by the school board. Since the addition of the new schedule, the start and end times of school have also changed. Last year it was 8:15 a.m. to 3:07 p.m.; now it is 8:00 a.m. to 3:19 p.m. Classes also have different start times because of the change. The addition of the eighth period has also resulted in shorter classes.

    Period 1 8:00-8:44
    Period 2 8:48-9:32
    Period 3 9:36-10:20
    Period 4 10:24-11:08
    “A” Lunch 11:08-11:33
    5A Class 11:37-12-21
    5B Class 11:12-11:56
    “B” Lunch 11:56-12:21
    Seminar 12:25-12:55
    Period 6 12:59-1:43
    Period 7 1:47-2:31
    Period 8 2:35-3:19

The new schedule has left a big impact on various students, many with their own opinion on the new schedule.

“It’s a long day but short periods are nice,” says junior Jordan Mauk.
“It makes the classes go by quicker but I’m not a fan of gym and the lengthened day,” says junior Caroline Trewet.
“Time goes by faster,” says senior Zack Smith.

The additional 27 minutes per day adds up to 81 hours added to the entire school year. But because class periods are shortened by eight minutes, students will lose 24 hours of class time per class over the year.
