Students’ thoughts on Japan

By Paul Honke

On Friday March 11, Japan was hit with a 8.9 level earthquake causing massive damage. However the worst was yet to come with tsunami’s hitting Japan causing the biggest crisis in Japan ever since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing in World War 2.  And now, according to the New York Times, thousands of people are leaving the area surrounding Japan’s nuclear power plants because of radioactive leakage from the damaged structures.

Some students of Atlantic High School have given their thoughts about the crisis in Japan.

“It’s a terrible thing, just as bad if it happened here. Luckily they’re [a developed country] so they won’t need as much help as Haiti did,” said senior Dan Thomsen.

“It’s tragic and very sad,” said sophomore Caroline M. Trewet.

“I think it’s horrible that a nuclear reactor actually malfunctioned. It’s something I never thought would happen and I wish them the best in cleaning it up.”
